WORKSHOP by por Chema García Ibarra & Leonor Díaz Esteve

Everything in front of the camera, whether of a textile or human nature, builds the film. By focusing on the making of an image in this way, the human is not degraded to the material level but the material is sublimated to the human level. In essence, curtains and people receive the same attention. This cup says the same as several dialogues or this cap has dramatic value. The process of selecting people, furniture and clothing are parallel and synergetic. Leonor Díaz Esteve, art direction and costume design, and Chema García Ibarra, script and direction, will talk about these processes from their films and show that everything that is placed in front of the camera is an entity that deserves the same level of attention, affection and respect.

Chema García Ibarra has directed and written The Attack of the Robots From Nebula-5 (2009), Protoparticles (2010), Mistery (2013), Uranes (2014), The Disco Shines (2016) and The Golden Legend (2019, in co-directed with Ion de Sosa), all of them domestic science fiction films made without professional actors. His films have been selected for festivals such as the Directors’ Fortnight in Cannes, Sundance, Berlinale, San Sebastián, Rotterdam or BAFICI. His 200 plus awards include, among others, two Honorable Mentions at Sundance, a Mention from the Jury in San Sebastián, and the BAFICI Vanguard and Gender Competition Award. Since 2015 he has taught the Anti-filmmaking subject in the ECAM Documentary Film Diploma. Sacred Spirit, his first feature film, premiered at the Locarno International Film Festival.

Leonor Díaz Esteve is an art director and costume designer born in Elche, Alicante. She has worked as artistic director and costume designer in all the films of Chema García Ibarra, as well as in projects of other directors such as David Pantaleón, Rendir los machos, or Velasco Broca. Her work in the short film Misterio was awarded with the prizes for Best Artistic Direction in ALCINE (Alcalá de Henares), for Best Artistic Direction and Best Costume at the Cinepropio Festival (Madrid) and for Best Artistic Direction at the Getafe Film Festival. In 2017, Leonor won the Award for Best Costume at the Medina del Campo Film Week for The Disco Shines. She has worked on music videos for bands such as Klaus & Kinski, Laverca Bentley, Parade or Templeton.
