As you know, our Retrospective section this year is devoted to the prestigious Portuguese filmmaker and professor Teresa Villaverde. Teresa, who has collaborated with a wide number of European institutions, such as Universidade de Évora (Portugal) and the Haute École d’Art et du Design (Geneva, Switzerland), will be offering a masterclass consisting in an open discussion during which she will share her vision of cinema with the attendees.
Villaverde started her filmmaking career at 22. Since then, she has found her own way in the making, without attending any cinema schools or official educational institutions. In her own words, “nowadays, filmmakers are frequently expected to have very detailed knowledge about a specific topic before they start making a film about it. However, most of the times this ends up being a limitation to the very ways of cinema: filmmaking can be a great tool for discovery… but it usually unfolds in the making, not before”.
